The Journey of Mike Mullis

Mike Mullis of Marietta, Georgia first contacted us to inquire about a Saddle Pal guitar. Mike is an accomplished guitarist who performs extensively throughout the South, both as a solo artist and with his band, Sons and Britches. You may have seen him perform in Nashville at well-known venues such as the Bluebird Cafe.

Mike was interested in trying a Saddle Pal before making a purchase and initially asked if we would ship one to him. We were happy to accommodate, but after some discussion, we agreed that it would be far more beneficial for Mike to visit Lame Horse Headquarters in person. This would give him the opportunity to play multiple instruments, see firsthand where and how they are built, spend time with us, and gather the insight needed to determine whether a Lame Horse guitar was the right fit for him.

From the beginning, Mike knew he wanted something truly special. He was not interested in a factory guitar or an instrument labeled “custom” simply because it featured stock inlays selected from a catalog. Instead, he wanted a guitar that sounded exceptional, played beautifully, and honored his family’s history and traditions.

Because every instrument we build at Lame Horse is entirely original and one of a kind, we knew we could meet—and exceed—those expectations. By the end of Mike’s visit, he and Jeremy were already deep into the design process, carefully laying out his custom rosette. Mike and Chris selected the wood for his Saddle Pal from hundreds of available sets, choosing materials that best reflected both his musical goals and his Georgia heritage.

That was the beginning of the journey, and the final result was one that everyone involved was proud of.

We invite you to watch his video featuring the completed guitar, listen to the audio recordings, and explore the photographs of this unique Saddle Pal—an instrument built to honor both music and family tradition.
